전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
마이어리거울프 서울은 2026년 8월 27일부터 11월 5일까지 «마르셀 뒤샹: 파리지앵 컬렉션»을 개최한다. 이번 마르셀 뒤샹 전시는 파리의 한 컬렉터가 약 30년에 걸쳐 수집한 마르셀 뒤샹 관련 작품과 자료 약 250점을 통해, 20세기 미술의 흐름을 근본적으로 바꾼 뒤샹의 예술 세계를 조명하고 그의 사유 세계로 깊숙이 들어갈 수 있는 몰입형 여정으로 구성했다.
이번 전시는 레디메이드와 회화로 잘 알려진 뒤샹을, 그 너머의 방대한 아카이브 자료를 통해 다시 바라본다. 작가가 직접 디자인하거나 제작에 관여한 서적, 카탈로그, 포스터, 초대장, 에페메라, 콜로타입 작업 등은 뒤샹의 예술이 대표작의 이미지에 머무르지 않고 출판과 전시, 복제와 유통의 네트워크 속에서 확장되어왔음을 보여준다. 특히 컬렉션 가운데 50여 점은 쉽게 접하기 어려운 희귀 자료로, 뒤샹의 작업이 당대의 예술가와 출판, 전시, 유통의 네트워크 속에서 어떻게 형성되고 확산됐는지를 살펴볼 수 있는 중요한 단서를 제공한다.
이번 전시의 주요한 키워드 중 하나는‘에디션(edition)’이다. 뒤샹은 일상의 사물을 예술의 영역으로 옮긴‘레디메이드’를 통해 작품의 유일성과 작가의 손, 저자성에 대한 기존의 관념에 질문을 던졌다. 동시에 복제와 반복, 유통의 방식을 적극적으로 활용하며 하나의 작품이 어떻게 다양한 형태와 맥락으로 다시 등장할 수 있는지를 탐구했다.
«마르셀 뒤샹: 파리지앵 컬렉션»은 개별 작품의 미술사적 의미를 넘어, 뒤샹의 아이디어가 이미지와 텍스트, 출판물과 전시를 통해 어떻게 순환하고 확장됐는지를 보여준다. 약 30년에 걸쳐 구축된 한 컬렉터의 시선을 따라가며, 오늘날까지 동시대 미술에 영향을 미치고 있는 뒤샹의 사고와 실천을 새롭게 살펴보는 자리다.
Meyer Riegger Wolff is pleased to present the first gallery exhibition dedicated to Marcel Duchamp, Marcel Duchamp: A Parisian Collection, in Seoul, South Korea. Bringing together an exceptional group of nearly 250 works, the exhibition offers a rare immersion into the universe of the artist. Conceived as an ambitious and coherent exploration, the works on display include books created or designed by Duchamp, exhibition catalogues, journals, artist’s books and ephemera. Far from constituting a simple documentary corpus, this ensemble forms a true experience, revealing the richness of a body of thought that profoundly transformed our understanding of art in the twentieth century.
Built over nearly thirty years, this private collection stands out in terms of the rigor of its construction and the consistency of its choices. It is not the result of accumulation but of careful selection, with particular attention paid to quality, historical relevance, and the capacity of the different elements to engage in dialogue with one another. Such coherence— now exceedingly difficult to reconstruct — positions this ensemble at an institutional level. Among these works, around fifty stand out for their extreme rarity. Some, scarcely accessible and seldom seen on the market or in institutional contexts, lend the exhibition a unique character. This concentration of rare works represents an exceptional opportunity, for institutions as well as for collectors and informed audiences, to access pieces that are usually dispersed or inaccessible.
The exhibition also offers an essential point of entry into understanding the work of Marcel Duchamp — particularly through the fundamental question of editions. Far from being mere vehicles of dissemination, these are considered as works in their own right and were fully integrated into his artistic practice. Duchamp develops a genuine editorial strategy: layout, typography, wordplay and fragmented constructions, all contribute to an overarching aesthetic in which the idea takes precedence over form.
