ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Gallery IHeng presents the curated group exhibition Apgujeong Redux. Organized by curator NoAm Kim, the show brings together seven artists — Chang Yong Shin, Un Kyoung, Kyung Min Lee, Kwan Young Lee, Sang Won Lee, YooHo Jang and Yuri Jin — whose practices together register recent shifts in the visual arts. Differing in subject, material, method and generation, they each take apart and reassemble the cultural signifier of "Apgujeong" in their own formal language.
Since the development of Gangnam in the 1970s, Apgujeong has been the center of Korean popular culture: birthplace of the 1980s–90s "Orange Tribe," and a site where real-estate capital, conspicuous consumption, nightlife and the surgical remaking of the body converge. As the front line of commodity aesthetics, it has been summoned again and again as a critical site for contemporary art. Ever since the poet Yuha made the place name a signifier of Korean consumer society in his 1991 collection "On a Windy Day I Must Go to Apgujeong-dong," Apgujeong has remained a psychological landscape where the country's brutality and moral duplicity overlap.
Seven distinct approaches intersect in the gallery. Chang Yong Shin summons icons of popular culture such as Bruce Lee and Marvel heroes in a pop-art idiom to rebuild the context of consumer society, while Sang Won Lee captures resort landscapes and crowds from a high vantage point to survey the anonymized leisure of modern life. Kwan Young Lee visualizes the immaterial human voice as three-dimensional work that widens art's perceptual field, and Kyung Min Lee records the delicate shifts of color and shadow arising from the materiality of oil paint itself, extending them into object installations using light. Un Kyoung stages a woman's personality shifting through conflict and the full range of emotion in dreamlike pastel-toned scenes, and YooHo Jang repeats and accumulates the signs of popular culture and industrial society in grids to explore the critical distance between consumer society and the anonymous multitude. Yuri Jin uses thread and crochet to cross the border between craft and fine art, testing the tactility of material and a new sense of form.
