JongHeon Bae(b. 1969) is not an artist who simply paints sansu(ๅฑฑๆฐด). Since the late 1990s, he has turned his attention to discarded objects, aging urban spaces, and traces of everyday life that often go unnoticed, looking at them anew and reinterpreting their meanings. He first explored these interests through conceptual installations, and from the mid-2010s, his practice expanded into painting. Stains and cracks on walls and the worn surfaces of objects become mountains, rocks, clouds, and valleys, sometimes forming an entire landscape. For Bae, painting begins not with creating a new landscape, but with discovering what has always been around us yet remained unseen.
This practice took on the form of landscape painting more fully in his 2019 exhibition MiJangJeSaek (็พๅ ้ฒ่ฒ). Bae found mountains and valleys in the marks left on concrete walls and architectural surfaces, transforming the artificial environment of the city into an unexpected place for experiencing landscape. "JeSaek" (้ฝ่ฒ) refers to the clear light and scenery of mountains and rivers after rain or snow. For Bae, JeSaek marks the moment when an ordinary urban surface is transformed into an entirely different landscape.
BulMyeonJeSaek (ไธ็ ่่ฒ): The Clearing After The Rain on a Sleepless Night shifts this gaze to the hours of sleeplessness. While the world sleeps, memory, imagination, thought, and sensation overlap, and the familiar gradually takes on an unfamiliar appearance.
The blue and gold that dominate the works in this exhibition suggest the boundary between reality and imagination. Bae first paints the surface gold and then covers it with deep blue. By sweeping or scraping away the blue, he reveals the gold beneath. Blue does not simply represent the night. It removes the familiar colors of reality, making ordinary objects and spaces appear strange and drawing them into the realm of memory and imagination. The gold beneath, in contrast, evokes an ideal world beyond realityโone that remains out of reach and therefore an object of longing.
What is intriguing is that this world is not newly created; it has been there beneath the surface from the beginning. As Bae sweeps and scrapes away the blue, the hidden gold emerges as mountains, rocks, clouds, and water. This paradoxical processโpainting while erasing, creating forms through removalโencapsulates his approach. The gaze that once discovered landscapes in the stains and cracks of the city now strips back the surface of painting itself to reveal another landscape.
Here, "BulMyeon" (ไธ็ ), or sleeplessness, goes beyond the personal experience of being unable to sleep. It means remaining awake while the world sleeps, looking closely at what seems to contain nothing, and continuing to look until a form begins to emerge. In this sense, sleeplessness is also a state of wakefulnessโa way of continuing to look for what cannot yet be seen.
What, then, might sansu(ๅฑฑๆฐด) mean today? Baeโs work invites us to reconsider Sansu not so much in terms of what it depicts, but in terms of how we look at the world. Just as jesaek ้ฝ่ฒ describes the landscape emerging after the rain has stopped and the clouds have cleared, another landscape comes into view in his sleepless nights as familiar reality falls away. These landscapes, encountered only because he could not sleep, may be his โGifts from Sleepless Nights.โ
