전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
예술공간 의식주는 서울아트위크 기간 동안 《세 가지 물을 따라: 2026 도도그랜트 4th 리서치 트립 공유회》를 개최합니다. 본 프로젝트는 예술공간 의식주 X 시각예술가 김선우 작가의 후원으로 진행되는 도도그랜트 리서치 트립에 선정된 안세은 작가의 리서치 트립 공유회입니다.
이번 프로젝트에서 안세은 작가는 '물의 기억'을 탐구하기 위해 황해, 소청도, 일본 홋카이도의 도카치 강 세 장소를 답사했습니다. 각 장소의 물이 지닌 물리적 상태의 변환과 이동, 순환의 구조를 추적하는 한편, 물을 기억에 대한 비유이자 아득한 과거의 시간을 상상하게 하는 단서로 바라봅니다. 리서치 과정에서 녹취한 사운드와 거대한 선박의 진동을 은유하는 철판을 결합한 '플레이트 리버브' 설치를 통해, 배와 항해, 철과 제철소, 그리고 바다로 이어지는 파편적 사유를 하나의 체험으로 연결합니다.
황해에서 작가는 배의 밸러스트 탱크에 실리는 바닷물, 그리고 배의 몸체를 이루는 철이 황해 연안 제철소에서 만들어지는 순환에 주목합니다. 소청도에서는 수억 년의 시간을 품은 지질층을, 이전 음을 기억하며 다음 음을 쌓아가는 '듣기'의 구조와 겹쳐봅니다. 도카치 강에서는 담수와 해수, 액체와 고체가 뒤섞이는 유빙을 통해 '경계란 무엇인가'를 다시 묻습니다.
세 장소를 잇는 이 항로는 하나의 결론을 향한 여정이 아닙니다. 작가는 각 장소에서 길어 올린 이미지와 텍스트, 사운드를 완결된 답이 아닌 질문의 파편으로 나열해 둡니다. 관객은 이 공간에서 작가가 걸어온 물의 경로를 따라가거나, 각자의 기억과 질문을 그 위에 겹쳐볼 수 있습니다.
The Necessaries presents Following Three Waters: 2026 DODO Grant 4th Research Trip Sharing during Seoul Art Week. The project shares the research trip of An Se Eun, selected for the DODO Grant research trip supported by The Necessaries and visual artist Kim Sun Woo.
To explore the "memory of water," An travelled to three places: the Yellow Sea, Socheongdo Island, and the Tokachi River in Hokkaido, Japan. Tracing how the water of each place shifts state, moves, and circulates, she looks at water as a metaphor for memory and as a clue for imagining a distant past. Through a plate reverb installation that combines sound recorded during the research with steel plates standing in for the vibration of a great ship, she connects fragmentary reflections on ships and voyages, iron and steel mills, and the sea into a single experience.
At the Yellow Sea, the artist attends to the seawater carried in a ship's ballast tanks, and to the circuit by which the iron forming the ship's body is made at steel mills along the Yellow Sea coast. On Socheongdo she overlays geological strata holding hundreds of millions of years with the structure of "listening," which remembers the previous note while building the next. At the Tokachi River, drift ice where fresh water and seawater, liquid and solid intermingle, prompts her to ask again what a boundary is.
The route linking these three places is not a journey toward a single conclusion. The artist lays out the images, texts, and sound drawn from each place not as finished answers but as fragments of questions. In this space, visitors can follow the path of water the artist has travelled, or lay their own memories and questions over it.
