전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
왕칸나는 불편한 이미지를 만든다. 사람과 동물이 한 몸에 섞이고, 척추는 비틀리고, 털이 온몸을 덮는다. 작가는 이 몸들을 키메라라 부른다. 혼종과 그로테스크의 미감으로 집요하게 그리는 몸들은, 그것을 거북하게 여기도록 만든 정상성의 윤곽을 드러낸다.
이번 전시는 2022년부터 2026년까지의 작업을 한자리에 놓는다. 긴 전시장의 벽을 종이 작업이 에워싸고, 한가운데를 도자 선반이 가로지르며, 가장 안쪽 바닥에 자수 천이 놓인다. 벽의 그림은 바라보는 것이고, 선반의 도자는 쥘 수 있는 것이며, 바닥의 천은 누울 수 있는 것이다. 키메라는 전시 공간 안으로 갈수록 관객의 몸에 가까워진다.
그의 문양은 고향 키르기스스탄의 전통에서 왔다. 왕칸나는 전통 문양을 가져오되 복원하지 않고, 신화를 빌리되 재현하지 않는다. 그의 키메라가 향하는 곳은 지나간 것의 회복이 아니라, 아직 익숙해지지 않은 미감이다.
King Kanna makes uncomfortable images. Humans and animals merge into one body, spines twist, and fur covers the whole body. The artist calls these bodies chimeras. Rendered persistently through an aesthetic of hybridity and the grotesque, they reveal the contours of the normality that made them seem unsettling in the first place.
The exhibition brings together works from 2022 to 2026. Works on paper surround the walls of the long gallery, ceramic shelves cut across its center, and embroidered textiles lie on the floor at the far end. The paintings on the wall are to be looked at, the ceramics on the shelves can be held, and the textiles on the floor can be lain upon. The further one moves into the space, the closer the chimeras come to the viewer's body.
Her motifs come from the traditions of her native Kyrgyzstan. King Kanna borrows traditional patterns without restoring them, and myths without reproducing them. Her chimeras point not to the recovery of the past, but toward an aesthetic we have not yet grown used to.
