전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
서혜연은 몸과 사물의 관계를 관찰하며 그 사이에 얽힌 기억과 공백의 감각을 물질 경험으로 재구성하는 작업을 전개해 왔다. 그는 그동안 매체 실험으로 만들어낸 물질들의 총체를 “만두”라고 이름 짓고, 이를 몸이 빚어내는 조각의 형상이자 몸의 기억이 담기는 공간으로 정의한다. 그런데 공교롭게도 만두가 터져버렸다.
첫 개인전 《터진 만두 안으로》는 제목이 명시하는 것처럼 “터진 만두 안으로” 향하는 순간을 가리킨다. 이는 몸과 물질의 관계 속에서 조각인 것, 조각이 아닌 것, 그리고 조각일 수 있는 것이 만나는 접면의 열린 상태로 들어가는 순간이다.
Seo Hyeyeon has observed the relationship between bodies and objects, reconstructing the entangled sense of memory and absence between them as material experience. She names the totality of materials produced through her media experiments “mandu” (dumplings), defining it as both a sculptural form shaped by the body and a space that holds the body’s memory. Coincidentally, however, the mandu has burst.
As its title states, her first solo exhibition, into the torn seams, points to the moment of heading “into the torn dumpling.” It is the moment of entering an open interface where what is sculpture, what is not sculpture, and what could be sculpture meet within the relationship between body and material.
