전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
엘 아나추이는 (b.1944, 가나 아냐코) 1990년대 후반부터 대형 병뚜껑 작업을 통해 조각의 새로운 가능성을 제시해 온 작가이다. 그가 금속 폐기물로 직조해 내는 형태와 색채의 장(場)은 확장적이다. 작가는 조각이 제작된 순간의 형태에 머무르지 않고, 설치된 장소와 방향에 따라 시시각각 반응하고 변화한다는 점에 주목하며 작품의 잠정적인 사물성을 포착한다. 화이트 큐브 서울과 홍콩에서 동시에 선보이는 금속 신작은 이러한 조각에 대한 작가의 사유를 더욱 선명하게 드러낸다. 그는 하나의 작업이 완성되기까지의 과정을 보여줌과 동시에, 작품이 내포하는 방향성과 이중성에 관한 질문을 던진다.

El Anatsui’s practice rests on a conception of sculptural objecthood as provisional: form is not fixed at the point of making but remains contingent, responsive to site, orientation and time itself.
The metal works on view at White Cube Seoul offer a renewed articulation of these concerns, rendering legible the processes of construction that underpin the works, while foregrounding questions of orientation and duality.
