전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
《Middle Ground: (불)가능한 식탁》은 밥을 차리는 이가 식탁의 규칙을 정할 수 없다는 비대칭을 뒤집는 가정에서 출발한다. 세상의 모든 사람이 한 상에 앉고, 이미 사라진 금기까지 모두 지켜야 한다면 무엇을 함께 먹을 수 있을까? 전시는 음식에 관한 서로 다른 조건을 동시에 적용해 보는 실험에 가깝다. 재료의 목록이 줄어드는 동안에는 조건들이 서로 양보하는 것처럼 보이지만, 끝에서 부딪히는 것은 시간이다. 자이나교의 수행자는 해가 진 뒤 먹지 않고, 라마단의 무슬림은 해가 떠 있는 동안 먹지 않는다. 전시장에 놓인 서로 다른 높이의 테이블에서는 요리와 식사, 대화가 이어진다. 매주 화·목요일 오후 2시부터 4시까지 음식을 만들고 함께 먹는 자리인 〈식사가 계속되는 동안〉가 열린다. 〈함께 먹기까지〉에서는 바라카 작은도서관의 아말과 살마, 이태원의 맥스, 셰프 이혜승이 각자의 규칙에 따라 상을 차린다. 〈열린 조리시간〉을 제외한 모든 프로그램은 사전 신청이 필요하다.
Middle Ground: (Im)possible Kitchen begins from a premise that overturns an asymmetry: the person who cooks cannot set the rules of the table. If everyone in the world sat at one table and every taboo, even vanished ones, had to be honored, what could we eat together? The exhibition is an experiment in applying different dietary conditions at once. As the list of ingredients shrinks the conditions seem to yield to one another, but in the end they collide over time: Jain ascetics do not eat after sunset, while Muslims during Ramadan do not eat while the sun is up. Cooking, meals and conversation unfold at tables of different heights in the gallery. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm to 4pm, While the Meal Goes On invites visitors to cook and eat together. In Until We Eat Together, Amal and Salma of Baraka Community Library, Max, who runs a shop in Itaewon, and chef Hyeseung Lee each set a table according to their own rules. All programs except Open Cooking Hours require advance registration.
