전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

박래현은 한국 근현대미술에서 회화와 판화를 넘나들며 조형 언어의 확장을 이끌어낸 작가이다. 일본 유학을 통해 근대적 미술 교육을 받은 그는 초기에는 인물과 일상을 섬세하게 포착하는 구상 회화를 선보였으나, 1960년대를 전후한 해외 경험을 계기로 작업 세계에 중요한 전환을 맞이한다. 미국과 유럽, 아프리카 등을 여행하며 접한 국제 미술 동향과 다양한 문명의 시각 문화는 그의 화면을 점차 추상적 구조와 상징적 형식으로 이끌었다. 당시 남성 중심의 화단에서 지속적으로 창작 활동을 이어간 그는 한국 현대미술에서 드문 선구적 여성 작가로서 중요한 위치를 차지한다. 이러한 변화는 1969년부터 1974년까지 이어진 미국 판화 유학을 통해 더욱 본격화된다. 포토에칭과 에쿼틴트, 콜라그래피 등 다양한 판화 기법을 탐구하며 반복과 우연, 재료의 물성을 적극적으로 화면에 도입했고, 이를 통해 회화 중심의 표현을 넘어서는 새로운 조형 언어를 구축했다. 판화 작업에서 나타나는 격자 구조와 생명의 근원을 연상시키는 모티프는 그의 작업이 지닌 상징적 세계를 한층 확장시키며, 회화와 판화를 가로지르는 독자적인 시각 체계를 형성한다. 이번 전시는 추상으로의 전환이 이루어지는 과도기의 작품에서부터 추상 회화가 본격적으로 전개되는 시기의 작업, 그리고 다양한 실험이 이루어진 판화 작품에 이르기까지, 박래현의 조형 언어가 형성되고 확장되는 과정을 단계적으로 조망한다.

Park Rehyun was one of the few pioneering female artists in modern Korean art, expanding her visual language across both painting and printmaking. Trained in Japan, she began with figurative works that sensitively depicted everyday life, but her practice underwent a decisive shift in the early 1960s following her experiences abroad. Encounters with international artistic movements, along with ancient artifacts and artistic traditions across the United States, Europe, and Africa, led her work toward increasingly abstract structures and symbolic forms. This trajectory was further transformed through her printmaking studies in the United States from 1969 to 1974. Working with techniques such as photo-etching, aquatint, and collagraph, she introduced repetition, chance, and material processes into her practice, developing a visual language that moved beyond painting-centered modes of expression. This exhibition brings together works from her transitional period, mature abstractions, and experimental prints, tracing the formation and expansion of Park Rehyun's distinctive artistic language.
