The Daegu Art Museum introduces the artistic practice of the French contemporary artist Stรฉphane Thidet through the 2026 UMI Hall Project. This will be the artistโs first exhibition in South Korea. Born in Paris in 1974, Thidet has worked across various mediums, including video and drawing, with a focus on installation and sculpture. Childhood memories, play, and experiences of nature frequently appear in his works, and he unsettles the border between order and chance by placing familiar objects and natural phenomena in unfamiliar situations. Reality and imagination are naturally mixed in his works, which sometimes appear familiar and beautiful, and these are accompanied by curiosity and pleasure, as well as tension and anxiety that are not easy to explain.
In Thidetโs works, objects that can easily be encountered in everyday life, such as a bed, hut, or boat, repeatedly appear along with natural elements such as water, fire, wind, and plants. These objects are slightly misaligned with their original functions and purposes. As familiar things are placed in different conditions and relationships, the order of reality is subtly unsettled, and a scene is created that resembles but is somehow different from the world we knew.
The exhibition title Out of Sync references this art-making method of Thidetโs. Misalignment here does not simply signify the flow of time being twisted. It is the state of not keeping pace with the order of reality, which moves according to function, rationality, and efficiency, and is closer to a way of creating small fissures in a familiar world. In those very fissures, an object acquires different possibilities, everyday order momentarily wobbles, and a poetic moment reveals itself.
Making active use of the 18-meter-high UMI Hall space, the exhibition presents the artistโs representative works in a new environment. Insomnia is an installation in which plants grow on several steel beds. Lights above the beds illuminate plants instead of sleeping people, and on beds intended for rest and sleep, the plants slowly grow and change over the course of the exhibition. As the time of plants that do not sleep meets objects made for human rest in the same space, the familiar beds are transformed into an unfamiliar scene. Even within the fixed structures of the beds, the plants grow at their own speeds and in their own directions, continuously changing the appearance of the work. The work is therefore less an installation that remains fixed in a completed state than a living scene that changes little by little as the exhibition continues.
In The Rotation of Emptiness, a wooden sailing vessel measuring five meters in length hangs suspended in midair and slowly rotates. A boat that ought to move forward instead continually draws a circle in place, departing from its original function of moving toward a destination and continuing a repetitive motion. The tip of the long mast passes over the sand spread across the floor, tracing a circle, and that movement gradually accumulates as a series of marks. The boat becomes at once a sculpture and a giant drawing device that continually draws lines, and as it slowly turns in midair, it also appears like a large pendulum measuring time.Fire is an important medium that repeatedly appears in Thidetโs drawings and videos. In his drawings, the artist creates the image by burning small dots into the surface, repeating this process countless times. In this process, which requires long periods of time and concentration, the small dots form thin lines, and the lines subtly tremble and overlap like waves across the surface. From a distance, an intricate order emerges, recalling a landscape or a musical score. But this meticulous repetition does not lead to complete control. Even as the fire follows the order established by the artist, it spreads and wavers slightly, leaving behind unexpected traces. The order produced through repetitive action and the movement of fire, which gradually slips beyond that order, coexist within a single image. In the video, fire appears in another way. In a peaceful landscape of green grass and dandelions, a burning branch touches the dandelion seeds one after another. Each time the fire touches them, the light and delicate seeds burn away in an instant, and the action is repeated from one dandelion to the next. The deliberate act of bringing fire to fragile life creates a strange contrast with the pastoral landscape, producing a tension in which beauty and discomfort coexist. The action is intentional and repeated, but the artist cannot completely control even the moments when the fire spreads and disappears. In both the drawings and the video, fire thus enters the order established by the artist while also slipping slightly beyond it, producing unpredictable traces and changes.
As the exhibition title suggests, Out of Sync begins with different experiences of time. We understand time as a single continuous flow, but in Thidetโs works, time moves at different speeds and rhythms. Some things grow, some disappear, some repeat, and others return to the same place even as they move. These different times coexist in a single space, but they do not completely fall into the same rhythm. Just as the time measured by a clock does not always coincide with the time we experience through our bodies, the times of our bodies and daily lives, and of society and our inner selves, also sometimes align and sometimes fall out of sync. Thus, Out of Sync encompasses the mismatches and gaps that arise between these different times and rhythms.
However, this โmisalignmentโ extends beyond the dimension of time to the order of objects and the world. A boat that ought to move forward circles along a fixed trajectory but arrives nowhere, while on beds intended for rest, plants rather than people grow at their own pace. In drawings created through meticulous repetition, fire produces subtle differences, and in a peaceful field, delicate dandelions disappear one by one in the flames. Interestingly, humans rarely appear in these scenes. Instead, the objects humans have made and used, and the traces they have left behind, remain, moving and changing. Rather than directly representing human stories, Thidet alters the relationships between familiar objects and natural phenomena. Beds and boats, plants and fire gradually depart from familiar relationships and orders, moving and changing in different ways and creating new relationships between objects and nature.
Stรฉphane Thidet: Out of Sync, the first UMI Hall Project in three years, thus presents moments when different times and rhythms, order and chance, and control and departure meet and fall out of sync. It is a story about time, but also about the ways we relate to the order of the world. When familiar things shift slightly out of place, reality begins to look different from before. And in those very subtle misalignments, different sensations and poetic possibilities that we had not yet noticed begin to reveal themselves.
For about four months, plants grow in UMI Hall, a boat slowly traces circles, and the traces left by fire and the different rhythms of time remain together. We hope visitors will pause for a while in this landscape, which changes little by little over the course of the exhibition, and discover the sensations and stories that arise within it.
