전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
심동수의 비디오들은 안정적인 화면과 사색(思索)하는 내면을 품는다. 한 쇼트 한 쇼트 정성스레 촬영(때로 수집)한 화면에서는 그가 대상으로 삼은 세계를 성실하게 마주하고 이를 정연하게 담아내고자 했던 의지를 볼 수 있다.
작가는 이번 전시의 비디오들을 여러 물리적 경로와 단계를 거쳐 도착하는 “Surface Mail(해상 및 육상 선편 우편)”에 비유하는데, 이는 작업에서의 기억과 이미지들이 여러 표면과 기준을 통과하는 과정을 드러낸다고 보았기 때문이다. 작업은 크게 두 가지 결로 나뉜다. 이미지에 대한 비평적 인식을 드러내는 〈Fine-grained〉(2026), 〈Damned stability〉(2018)와 사건이 기억되고 기록되는 방식을 성찰하는 〈Untitled〉(2026), 〈M-I-59T〉(2022)다. 이 작업들은 각각의 과거와 현재를 서로 비춤으로써 그 기간 작가의 시선이 변한 것이 있다면 무엇인지, 그럼에도 연관된 것이 있다면 무엇인지도 들여다보도록 한다.
작가는 자신의 고민 혹은 질문에 대해 섣부르게 답을 내리지 않는다. 오히려 맞닥뜨린 대상을 섬세하게 따라가 보는 관찰자와 같이 자기의 입장을 전개한다. 이미지의 외부 혹은 기억과 기록의 외부가 있다면 그것이 무엇인지 작품을 제작하는 과정과 함께 찾아 나서며, 이를 명시적으로 정의하기보다 그 여정을 제시함으로써 누구든 그 여정에 가닿을 수 있기를 기대한다.
Shim Dongsu's videos hold steady frames and a contemplative inner life. In each carefully filmed (and at times collected) shot, one can sense the artist's resolve to face their chosen world sincerely and to capture it with composure.
The artist likens the videos in this exhibition to “Surface Mail” — post that travels by sea and land, arriving through multiple physical routes and stages — as a way of revealing how memories and images in the work pass through many surfaces and standards. The works divide into two strands: 〈Fine-grained〉 (2026) and 〈Damned stability〉 (2018), which reveal a critical awareness of images, and 〈Untitled〉 (2026) and 〈M-I-59T〉 (2022), which reflect on how events are remembered and recorded. By letting each work's past and present illuminate one another, the exhibition also invites viewers to consider what has shifted in the artist's gaze over that time, and what has stayed connected.
The artist does not rush to answer their own questions, unfolding a position instead like an observer who closely follows what they encounter. Searching, through the process of making, for whatever may lie outside of images, memory, and record, the artist presents the journey itself rather than explicitly defining what was found — hoping that anyone might reach that journey too.
