전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
정주원은 캔버스 앞에 앉았을 때에 본인의 살갗에 맞닿아 있다고 생각되는 문제, 가장 크게 다가오는 것을 그리려고 한다. 회화는 그리는 사람의 몸과 가장 내밀하게 연결되어 있는 매체라고 생각하며, 작가와 작업 사이의 이질감이 느껴지지 않는 작업을 하고자 한다. 그래서인지 작가가 발 딛고 있는 지점, 작가를 둘러싼 상황, 개인적 서사에서 이야기가 시작되곤 했다. 최근에는 4대가 함께 사는 가족 형태를 경험하며, 세대 간의 돌봄과 의존, 그것에서 비롯되는 복합적 감정에 관심을 가져왔다. 또한 회화의 표면, 사람의 피부, 나무의 껍질 세 가지가 모두, 겪어온 시간이 압축되어 반영된 표면이라는 유사성을 가진다는 점에 주목하며, 그림의 표면에 대해 연구하고 있다.
When Jeong Juwon sits before the canvas, the artist sets out to paint the issues that feel pressed against their own skin — whatever looms largest. Seeing painting as the medium most intimately connected to the body of the person who paints, Jeong seeks to make work with no sense of distance between artist and work. The stories have therefore often begun from where the artist stands, the circumstances surrounding them, and personal narratives. Recently, through living in a household of four generations, Jeong has become interested in care and dependence across generations and the complex emotions that arise from them. Noting that the surface of a painting, human skin, and tree bark share a likeness as surfaces in which accumulated time is compressed and reflected, the artist is researching the surface of painting.
