Kim Yun Shin (b. 1935, Wonsan) is one of the women artists who played a pivotal role in the development of Korean modernist sculpture in the 1970s. As the era of abstract sculpture dawned and sculptors explored new materials and techniques, Kim Yun Shin gained recognition for her wood sculptures expressing the vitality of nature.
This exhibition's subtitle, Two Be One, derives from the artistβs concept of βAdd Two Add One Divide Two Divide Oneβ that has guided her practice since the mid-1970s. Based on the Eastern philosophy of yin and yang, this poetic expression means the union of material and artist leads to the creation of another entityβartwork. She had attained this intuitive insight through her creative process of observing wood and bringing form from it.
Kim Yun Shinβs pursuit of this ideology blossomed in Argentina. Seeking abundant nature and lush trees, the artist left behind all her achievements in South Korea and emigrated to the resource-rich country, where she devoted herself to achieving her highest life goalsβmaking art and celebrating nature and lifeβfor forty years. Working in and with South American nature and culture, Kim Yun Shin developed her own unique language of abstract sculpture, which thus offers an important case for examining transnational expansion of modernist art across the globe.
Paving her own path through studies and experiences in Korea, France, and Argentina for seven decades, Kim Yun Shin has produced an ongoing oeuvre that is both diverse and consistent. Considering the interplay between her two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, and between her early and later works, this retrospective exhibition approaches her oeuvre as a unified universe. The first-floor presentation surveys her works from the twentieth century, illuminating the visual links among her printmaking, painting, and sculpture. The second floor features the artistβs significant stone sculptures alongside a diverse range of works from the 2000s onward, presenting a visual narrative where painting and sculpture increasingly inform one another and share a common formal language.
Kim Yun Shin has been creating as if breathing, as if art were her way of proving herself alive. Invigorated by sawing and hammering marks, her sculptures evoke the artistβs physical presence, a rare thing in todayβs contemporary art. Hoam Museum of Art is very pleased to present Kim Yun Shin: Two Be One, which marks the museumβs first solo exhibition dedicated to a Korean female artist. Welcome to the world of the artist who, driven by pure passion and belief, has lived her life in harmony with art.
