전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
어떤 장소는 그곳을 떠난 뒤에도 남는다. 그러나 남아 있는 것은 장소의 온전한 모습이 아니다. 나무가 드리웠던 그늘, 한때 눈에 들어왔던 색, 어디에서 보았는지 분명하지 않은 윤곽 같은 것들이 서로 떨어진 채 기억 속에 머문다. 우리는 때로 이 조각들을 고향이라 부른다. 그 이름은 익숙하지만, 이름이 가리키는 곳을 하나의 풍경으로 펼쳐 보이기는 어렵다. 돌아가고 싶은 마음과 돌아갈 곳의 모습 사이에는 빈자리가 있다.
박희주의 그림은 그 빈자리 가까이에서 시작된다. 여러 도시를 옮겨 다닌 작가에게 집은 하나의 좌표를 넘어 마음이 머무를 수 있는 장소로 확장되어 왔다. 관찰한 자연과 지나온 곳의 기억, 아직 가보지 않은 세계에 대한 상상은 화면에서 서로의 일부가 된다. 그 과정에서 어떤 형상은 나무나 산처럼 보이다가도 다른 색과 윤곽에 붙어 낯선 모습을 얻는다.
Some places remain even after we leave them. Yet what remains is not the place in its entirety. The shade a tree once cast, a color that once caught the eye, an outline whose origin is no longer clear — these linger in memory, detached from one another. We sometimes call these fragments home. The name is familiar, but it is hard to unfold the place it points to into a single landscape. Between the longing to return and the image of the place to return to, there is an empty space.
Heeju Park’s paintings begin close to that empty space. For the artist, who has moved between many cities, home has expanded beyond a single coordinate into a place where the heart can rest. Observed nature, memories of places passed through, and imaginings of worlds not yet visited become part of one another on the canvas. In the process, a form that looks like a tree or a mountain attaches itself to other colors and outlines and takes on an unfamiliar appearance.
