전시 소개 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

관람료: 무료 작품이 전시된 미술관 공간에서 무언가를 설명하는 글을 만나는 것은 익숙한 일이다. 그러나 《글짓, 쓰는 예술》 전시에서 글은 작품을 구성하는 가장 본질적인 언어이다. 이곳에서 글은 감상을 돕는 수단이 아닌 작품의 근간이며, 전시의 숨은 주인공이 된다. 관객은 작품에 깃든 고유한 서사를 능동적으로 읽어내며, 또 다른 세계를 그려나가는 작가들의 여정에 동행하게 될 것이다. 《글짓, 쓰는 예술》은 서울시립미술관의 2026년 기관 의제인 ‘창작’을 탐구하는 전시이다. 미술계뿐 아니라 문학과 음악 등 여러 분야에서 통용되는 ‘작가’라는 단어는 예술 작품을 독창적으로 짓거나 표현한다는 창작의 의미를 강하게 내포한다. 이번 전시는 작가를 글 쓰는 사람, 즉 문학가로 여기는 일반적인 인식에 착안하여 ‘글쓰기’를 통해 미술 창작을 이해하며, 미술가가 생산하는 글에 주목한다. 전시의 제목인 ‘글짓’은 여러 형태의 움직임을 갖게 된 글의 몸짓을 의미하는 것으로, 작가의 몸을 통과하여 전시 공간에 펼쳐지는 글의 생명력을 은유한다. 문학과 미술의 영역을 넘나들며 글쓰기를 창작의 씨앗으로 삼는 10명(팀)의 작가가 참여하는 《글짓, 쓰는 예술》은 글을 쓰고 읽는 행위가 작품 제작과 감상의 기반이 되는 창작의 세계를 조명한다. 미술가가 글을 쓰는 이유는 무엇일까? 손으로 끄적인 하나의 단어, 짧은 문장부터 시, 소설, 수필, 극본, 노래 가사에 이르기까지, 이들이 쓰는 글은 저마다의 결을 드러낸다. 작가들에게 글쓰기란 무수히 떠오르는 영감을 붙잡기 위한 기록이자, 머릿속을 떠다니는 생각이 물질화해 작품으로 실현될 수 있도록 하는 중요한 도구이다. 어떤 글은 회화나 조각으로 시각화되고, 어떤 글은 리듬을 타고 사운드를 입으면서 음악으로, 또 키네틱 퍼포먼스로 구현되기도 한다. 때로는 글자라는 기호로써 의미를 전달하거나, 이야기가 있는 문학의 형태로 등장하기도 한다. 작업의 출발점이자 작품의 뼈대가 되는 글은 이렇듯 다양한 예술의 방식으로 변주되며 텍스트 너머의 입체적인 서사로 확장된다. 머릿속을 맴도는 흐릿한 잔상들이 글을 쓰면서 비로소 선명해진 경험은 누구에게나 있을 것이다. 이번 전시의 참여 작가들이 글을 쓰는 것도 바로 이러한 이유와 맞닿아 있다. 글을 쓰면서 생각이 정리되고, 하고자 하는 이야기를 명료하게 표현할 수 있기 때문이다. 이들에게 글은 이미지와 다를 바 없는 미술의 재료이자 매체이다. 글을 쓰면서 나오게 된 예술에는 자신만의 생각과 질문에서 비롯된 이야기를 내밀하게 언어화해 작업으로 제시하려는 작가들의 오랜 창작의 시간이 축적되어 있다. 모든 것이 즉각적으로 생성될 수 있는 지금의 세상에서 인내와 기다림을 필요로 하는 글 쓰는 예술의 가치는 그래서 더욱 빛난다. -관람포인트- 전시 기간 중, 작품이 설치된 전시실 1에서 이민선 작가의 <정확한 말> 낭독 퍼포먼스가 진행됩니다. 퍼포먼스 당일에는 오픈 리허설이 있을 예정이오니, 관람에 참고 바랍니다. 리허설과 퍼포먼스 모두 자유롭게 관람하실 수 있습니다. ■ 일시 1회차: 4월 23일(목) 17:00 2회차: 5월 2일(토) 14:00 3회차: 5월 15일(금) 16:00 4회차: 6월 27일(토) 14:00 5회차: 7월 10일(금) 16:00 * 퍼포먼스 소요 시간은 약 45분입니다. * 1회차 4월 23일(목), 2회차 5월 2일(토) 퍼포먼스 시 촬영이 진행될 예정입니다. * 5회차 7월 10일(금) 퍼포먼스는 관객참여형으로 진행됩니다. 자세한 사항은 추후 공지를 통해 안내 될 예정입니다. ■ 장소: 서울시립 북서울미술관 1층 전시실 1 ■ 출연: 이민선(작가), 강연화, 신동우(배우) - 작/연출: 이민선 - 트라마투르그: 이수지 - 출연: 강연화, 신동우 - 촬영: 최윤석 - 번역: 김선진 자료 출처: 서울시립미술관 전시전경: 서울시립미술관

Free Admission Coming across explanatory texts in a museum space is a familiar experience for museumgoers. In the exhibition Where Writing Breathes, however, writing constitutes the most essential language of the artworks themselves. Here, text is not a supplementary aid to appreciating works but the very ground upon which the works are built; it is indeed the hidden protagonist of the exhibition. That is why visitors to this exhibition in particular are strongly encouraged to read the narratives embedded within each work and accompany the artists on their journeys as they envision and unfold other worlds. Where Writing Breathes explores “creation,” the Seoul Museum of Art’s institutional theme for 2026. The term “artist,” widely used across disciplines such as fine art, literature, and music, carries a strong implication of creative authorship―the act of composing or expressing something original. Taking as its point of departure the common perception of the artist as a writer, this exhibition approaches artistic creation through the lens of writing and focuses on the texts produced by artists. The exhibition title “Where Writing Breathes” implies the gestures of writing that take on various forms of movement, metaphorically evoking the vitality of text as it passes through the artist’s body and unfolds in the exhibition space. Bringing together ten artists/artist teams who traverse the boundaries between literature and fine art, Where Writing Breathes illuminates a creative field in which the acts of writing and reading form the very basis of both making and experiencing artworks. Why do artists write? From a hastily scribbled word or a brief sentence to poetry, fiction, essays, scripts, and song lyrics, their writing reveals distinct textures and sensibilities. For these artists, writing serves both as a means of capturing fleeting inspiration and as a crucial tool that enables thoughts, once intangible, to take material form and are realized as artworks. Some texts are visualized into painting or sculpture; others take on rhythm and sound, becoming music or kinetic performance art. At times, writing appears as a system of signs that conveys meaning; at others, it emerges in the form of narrative literature. As both the point of departure and the structural framework of artistic practice, writing is continuously transformed across diverse artistic modes, expanding into multidimensional narratives beyond the text itself. Most people have probably experienced how indistinct impressions lingering in the mind become clear through the act of writing. It is precisely for that reason that the participating artists in this exhibition write in the first place―writing allows them to organize their thoughts and articulate their intentions with clarity. For them, writing is a material and a medium of art, and something no different from image. The art that emerges through writing bears the accumulated time of creation by artists who have long sought to give intimate language to their own thoughts and questions, shaping them into their work. In a world where almost everything, it seems, can be generated instantly, the value of writing as an artform, which demands patience and perseverance, shines all the more brightly.
